Beginner's Overnight Hiking

Women's Beginner Navigation Skills

If you've never overnight hiked before, this activity is just for you.


We'll provide ALL the gear - your own tent / sleeping bag / sleeping mat, crockery and cutlery- even raingear if you don't have it. You just bring clothes and food. We'll provide easy meal guidance, as well.


We'll take you on your very first overnight hike and camp. (An small equipment list will be provided on sign-up).


The hike-in and out to our campsite is on moderate trails with one short but steep section (for about 300 metres), and around 6 klms in distance (one way). A moderate fitness level is required. 


You'll learn: Camp etiquette, how to pick a camp site,  campfire lighting 101*, camp cooking, camp hygiene, how to sleep soundly in the bush, how to properly pack a backpack, as well as hiking safety and hiking basics. 


If time permits, we'll also cover basic compass use and an introduction to maps.


Our site has a historic hut, tank water and a long-drop toilet. While we won't be sleeping in the hut, we can use it in the evening for a campfire, marshmallows and cooking under cover.


This is an overnight course starting at 09:00 am and finishing at 14:00 on the following day. Run on weekends and during the week. We need a minimum of two participants to go ahead.


Course fee: $210 per person. All gear is provided (our gear is modern, lighweight and high quality) 


*where permitted by law - please note we practice sustainable and environmentally friendly camping, along with Leave No Trace

Women's Beginner Navigation Skills

A six hour course covering the basics of wilderness navigation, using a topographical map and compass.

We'll cover:  

  • How to use a compass
  • How to read and understand a topographical map
  • Orienting the map
  • Taking a bearing 
  • Calculating distance and walking time                             
  • Interpreting reality vs the map
  • You'll then apply this knowledge by navigating your way around a small 5 klm sectional walk, using the map and compass
  • How to set-up safety features when navigating
  • Basic re-orienting skills, if you get lost or disoriented


 This course is suitable for complete beginner navigators, those who do social and recreational bushwalking on formed tracks, and want the comfort of being able to re-orient themselves, if they need to.


Course fee: $75 per person, includes use of map and compass. Compasses available to purchase.

A comprehensive introduction to bush safety for all outdoors women. Beginner and experienced alike, this course will help give you greater confidence and skills to safely get outdoors.

 

You'll learn:

  • what critical pre-planning actions to take
  • the ten critical things to always take with you (our own amended list, not the standard 'internet list), and options available
  • Emergency communications
  • self-rescue techniques if you are geographically challenged (and some secret tips on how not to be!
  • how to prioritise your actions if you are lost
  • how to maximise your rescue chances
  • basic introduction to map and compass


Course fee: $65 / 4 hour course

Shelter. It's one of the most critical survival elements. 


We'll show you how to tie six different knots, put up five different tarp configurations, including how to make an emergency shelter as well as teaching you about outdoor fabrics, understanding rope material, size and construction.


We also look at ridgeline hardware for those who don't want to remember outdoor knots.

We'll do a hands-on look at and review of many different commercial emergency survival kits that are available on the market. 


You'll see what works, what is rubbish and not to waste your money on, and how to make your own ultralight Emergency Survival Kit using common (and low cost) things around your home.


The course covers:


  • Why do we need a kit?
  • What should be in one?
  • Key principles for kits
  • Types of items available for kits
  • Unnecessary and redundant items
  • How to keep kits small and cost-effective
  • Hands-on look at 20+ commercial kits available, and why they are a waste of money
  • Tips and tricks on keeping your kit affordable
  • We'll have some basic items available for purchase

3 Day Survival Skills Course

3 Day Survival Skills Course

This is our most comprehensive survival skills experience


There's no cammo or mainsplaining here. We take a pragmatic approach to surival, based on lost person psychology, Search & Rescue statistics and practice and what will maximise your rescue chances.


We'll cover: 

  

  1. Introduction to Survival 
  2. Survival vs Wilderness Living Skills
  3. Survival psychology, mindset and search and rescue insights
  4. Survival priorities 
  5. Medical Emergencies / First Aid Kits
  6. Shelter
  7. Fire 
  8. Water

  11. How people get lost, and how to get 'unlost'
  12. Emergency survival kits
  13. Knives and blade handling / knife sharpening / Knife selection


This course includes three nights and two days of bush camping - you'll have the opportunity to sleep in your emergency bush shelter (if you choose), or we can provide comfortable and modern camping gear.


You'll have fun trying out gear and kit, learning new skills and meet other, like-minded outdoor women. BYO food, wine and campfire chocolate!


The course starts at 17:30 pm on a Friday and finishes at noon on a Monday

We'll cover:


  • Everything you'll ever need to know about how to buy a backpack, sleeping bag (down vs sythentic, quilts, shapes, features), sleeping mat (what's an R value), hiking stoves, safety communication, first-aid kits, rainjacket fabric demystified, and much much more
  • How to choose between weight, price and quality
  • Simplifying gear technical terms
  • Understanding different features and options 
  • How to simplify gear choices 
  • Hands-on look at hundreds of pieces of gear ranging from top quality brands,  ultra-light and ultra-expensive cuben fibre to cheap and cheery gear that also works, if you're looking for budget choices 
  • We'll do some tent assembling so you can see how to put up different types of tents, sizing, features and space

If you don't want to participate with others, or in a group setting, we can offer a one-on-one / solo and tailored experience for any of our activities.


Customised hiking and survival courses can be provided.


We can also provide private group navigation or one-on-one navigation practice, particularly if you feel you need to focus on one or a couple of specific issues

 

There are many reasons for choosing a private session:


  • You simply prefer the focused attention only available during a private session
  • You feel you need to focus on just one specific topic
  • You’re not able to join our weekend courses
  • It’s a family / work colleagues fun day out
